Communication

"The art of Communication is the language of leadership."

Nonprofit Grant Writing

The funding needs of private foundations and nonprofit organizations differ in many respects from those of public agencies.  Funding is not budgeted and distributed through tax fund allocations, but raised through various outside sources.  Funding in nonprofit organizations can be sourced through direct customer interaction, contracts, donors, fundraising mechanisms, and grant applications.  Grant writing is an integral mechanism of communication in the nonprofit sector.  Well crafted grant proposals should effectively communicate the mission, purpose, and particular needs of an organization.  Successful and professionally constructed grant proposals can make the all the difference in fundraising and organizational success.  Attached is a grant proposal written on behalf of Camp Veritas Inc.  This proposal was prepared for the Summer 2019 Grant Writing Course.

Performance Measurement and Reporting for Public and Nonprofit Organizations

In Nonprofit organizations, as is in all organizations, communication with stakeholders is an essential element of organizational and program success. Organizational programs can succeed or fail depending on how well they are communicated internally and externally.  Effective communication is centered on clearly presenting the necessary information and understanding the information needs of the audience to which it is being presented. When presenting the process of new and ongoing programs to organizational stakeholders an orgnanized and delineated logic model can be an effective tool of communication.  Attached is a mock memo and logic model developed for the donors to a Haitian infrastructure program managed by Malteser International. This memo and logic model was prepared for the Spring 2021 Performance Measurement and Reporting course.

Technology in Public Administration

Transparency in government is an important and ongoing discussion in the field of public administration.  An effective public agency is also a transparent public agency.  Transparency is more than just lifting the bureaucratic veil between agencies and citizens, it is effective communication between public agencies and those they serve.  Effective communication is a powerful tool in making government more transparent.  Not only can governemnt effectively share information with its citizens, but the voices and opinions of those citizens can begin to effect how government works and makes decisions.  The most ubiquitous communication tool at the disposal of public agencies is the internet and websites.  To ensure transparency through effective communication, government websites should allow for more than just agency announcements and public statistics.  They should provide a means for citizens to engage with their government.  Attached is an audit of the website for NYC's Department for the Aging.  This audit studies the level of transparency and possibility for engagement through effective communication.  This audit was prepared for the Fall 2020 Technology in Public Administration Course.
